VITALITY HEALTH CHECK

Preventative and screening tests

Knowing your cholesterol levels, glucose, bloodpressure and Body mass index might reduce your risk for heart diseases, strokes, Diabetes and some chronic diseases that might be prevented.

Earn up to 12 000 Vitality points with Vitality Health Check each year! You can go for more than one check in a calendar year, but you’ll only earn Vitality points once a year. As a main member, you’ll earn Vitality points when you complete the Vitality Health Check, as will your spouse and dependants over 18. Earn bonus Vitality points if your test results are within the goal range.

All Vitality points automatically reflect on your Vitality Points Monitor within two weeks.

Goal range to earn bonus points:

Weight assessment 500 Body Mass Index (BMI) between 18.5 and 24.9 OR BMI between 25 – 29.9, and a waist circumference of less than 102cm for males and less than 88cm for females 2 500

Blood pressure 500 Reading of 140mmHg/90mmHg or less 2 500

Glucose 500 Reading of less than 7.8 mmol/l 2 500

Cholesterol 500 Reading of less than 5 mmol/l 2 500

Discovery Health covers the cost of R170 once a year from your Screening Benefit for the Vitality Health Check. If you don’t have all the screening tests on the same day, you will have to pay for the tests you have later from your Medical Savings Account or your pocket. If you are a Discovery Life policyholder, you will need to pay for the Vitality Health Check yourself. If a waiting period applies to you or your family you can only use the Screening and Prevention Benefit when your waiting period expires

Glucose test – If you are planning on doing your glucose test during the Vitality Health Check, it is important to know that this is a random test, so you don’t have to fast before the test. If you do eat or drink anything before the test, it will affect your glucose reading. So for a more accurate result it is advisable to not eat for about two to three hours before the test.

VOLUNTARY HIV SCREENING TEST

An HIV test is either a set of blood tests, oral swab test or finger prick test used to diagnose infection with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. If the test is positive, it will have to be confirmed with a second blood test.

What to know before the test

  • No physical preparation is necessary for the test, but you must have professional counselling before the test.

Paying for the HIV test

  • Discovery Health pays for the test on all Discovery Health Plans from the Screening Benefit.

Vitality points

  • All adults (older than 18) earn 5 000 Vitality points for having an HIV test.
  • Vitality points are awarded within two to four weeks.
  • Please note you will only be awarded points for the HIV test once a year fot the test.

Kids Vitality Health Check

get your flu shotEarn 2 500 Vitality points per child when you take them for a Kids Vitality Health Check. The Kids Vitality Health Check identifies any potential developmental issues your child may face as well as their risk for chronic diseases of lifestyle.

All Vitality members can earn 1 000 Vitality points a year for having a flu vaccination. Make sure you protect yourself and your family and earn Vitality points.

 

HPV vaccineThe HPV vaccine is given to adolescent females and males to protect against four major types of human papillomavirus, a major cause of cervical cancer in women.

There are three doses of the vaccination that are given at different times: the second dose must be given two months after the first and the third dose.

All females and males on Vitality who are between nine and 25 years old will earn Vitality points for having the HPV vaccination. Under the age of 14 only 2 doses.

  • 1 000 Vitality points will be awarded after the completion of the three-dose schedule.

Vaccinations 0 – 2 years

Earn 5 000 Vitality points when your baby gets all the childhood vaccinations they need.

Points can only be rewarded when your child is between the ages of 18 and 24 months.

Antenatal classes

Get 2 000 Vitality points for going for antenatal classes to help prepare you for childbirth and motherhood.

CPR course

Earn Vitality points for completing a CPR course at any accredited provider. You will earn 2 500 Vitality points every year, for as many years as the certificate is valid.

Vitality points

Papsmears are recommended for women under the age of 65 and women who are sexually active. During a Pap smear a sample of cervical cells is collected and send to the Laboratory.

What to know before the test

  • The best screening time is between 10 and 20 days after the first day of your period.
  • In the two days leading up to your test, take a shower rather than a bath and avoid douching or using spermicides because this can hide abnormal cervical cells.

Paying for the Pap smear

  • Discovery Health pays for the Pap smear on all Discovery Health Plans from your Screening Benefit. The consultation fee is paid from your day-to-day benefits.

Vitality points

  • You earn 2 500 Vitality points for a Pap smear if you are a female under the age of 65.
  • Vitality points are awarded within two to four weeks.
  • Visit a healthcare provider for a Pap smear once every two years. You will earn the points in the year of the screening, and in the next year.

Paying for the vaccination

Discovery Health pays vaccinations from the available funds in your Medical Savings Account. The costs do not count towards the Annual Threshold. six months (or at least 24 weeks) after the first dose.

The PPSV vaccination prevents pneumococcal infection that causes serious condition like pneumonia and meningitis. It is recommended that adults, 65 years and older, have the vaccination to reduce the risk of pneumonia.

Earn Vitality points

  • All Vitality members who are 65 years and older will earn Vitality points for having a PPSV vaccination.
  • 1 000 Vitality points will be awarded once-off for the vaccination.
  • There are two vaccinations available. Eligible members will earn points for either one of the two up to a maximum of 1 000 points

Children from four to seven years receive repeat vaccinations for chicken pox (Varicella); measles, mumps and rubella (MMR); polio; and diptheria, tetanus and pertussis (DTaP

  • All children on Discovery Vitality who are between four and seven years old will earn Vitality points (once-off ) after having the five repeat vaccinations.
  • Each child will earn 1 000 points for being up to date with their childhood vaccinations.
